About My City

Thiruvananthapuram:

The capital city of Kerala

Formerly known as Trivandrum, Thiruvananthapuram is a center of various cultural activities and offers everything a visitor may ask for. Literally the word Thiruvananthapuram means the abode of the sacred thousand headed serpent Anantha, who forms the couch on which reclines Lord Vishnu.

The city is among the famous tourist and commercial centers of south India. As evidenced by the various buildings around the city, the place is remarkable for the subtle merging of modern and traditional architecture. Being the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram also throbs with political activity.

The city has many hot tourist destinations such as Kovalam Beach, Shanghumughom Beach and Veli Tourist Village. Kovalam Beach graces the southern edge of the city. Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, which plays an important role in India’s space program, is at the northern end.

Other tourist spots are Napier Museum, Sree Chitra Art Gallery, Thiruvananthapuram Zoo and Natural History Museum. There is the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple and the Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple for the religiously minded people.

An important entry point into India, Thiruvananthapuram provides links to the Maldives, Sri Lanka and many countries to the west of the Arabian Sea. Trivandrum Airport, an international airport, serves as the main gateway into Kerala. Thiruvananthapuram Central Bus Station and Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station connect this city with other prominent destinations in and around Kerala.
